You are bidding on this nice hard cover first edition of Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain, A Biography by Justin Kaplan. It is a first edition, but I am unsure if it is a first printing. It has a signature facsimile of Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain in it. It was published by Simon and Schuster and has a copyright date of 1966. It is in particularly good to like new condition. It has some exceptionally light wear at the corners and edges, but the spine and binding are good, and all 424 pages are intact and in good condition. The paper dust jacket is also in good condition, bit some wear at the corners and edges, some light scuffs and stains, and some yellowing from age. The book is a wonderful account of the life and times of Mark Twain, and has some photographs as well…
Mark Twain, the American comic genius who portrayed, named, and in part exemplified America’s “gilded Age”, becomes alive and immediate—a presence felt, an artist understood. Working since 1959 with new and unpublished material and with correspondence that has been available only in recent years, Mr. Kaplan has made concrete both the man and the times. He has broken through both the bland textbook image of mark Twain and the pathetic myth that replaced it – of a rugged free spirit “genteelized” and castrated by New England respectability. He gives us back the triumphant-tragic man whose achievements and failures, laughter, and anger, reflected a crucial generation in our past as well as his own dark, divided and remarkably contemporary spirit.
The book begins as the 31-year-old Mark Twain, carrying bottled within himself the experience of his boyhood in Hannibal and his coming of age on the Mississippi and on Nevada’s silver-rush frontier, quits San Francisco and the old elemental America of the open spaces. He is heading East for the burgeoning new urban America of commerce, invention, finance, and status, where he is destined to marry an heiress, hobnob with the rich and influential, throw fortunes away on tragically alluring schemes…and produce literary works that fulfill and go beyond the vocation he has already acknowledged...
