By John Habberton
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1881.
First edition, first printing.
Illustrated by Thulstrup on fifteen black-and-white plates.
Former owner's name in small type stamped to the front endpaper, mild surface stains to covers, else very good and tight in amber-mustard cloth with decorative borders and titles stamped in brown to the front cover and to the spine with leaf and flower patterned endpapers.
An intriguing, suspenseful, boy's action tale featuring a new boy in the village--who is challenged with rough playing boys, and all kinds of low-life characters.
As in most of Habberton's stories, Paul survives life's tests and is admired for being honest and upstanding. It is revealed at the end that Paul is unlike his beloved father who is in jail for being a gambler and a criminal.
The author was best known for the early classic HELEN'S BABIES.
A very attractive copy in a vintage decorative binding.
A well-preserved, sturdy, 1881 book.
