Fans of the television program THE AMAZING RACE may be surprised to discover that the show is largely based upon a novel published well over 100 years ago.  AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS was another of the "fantastic" novels written by French author Jules Verne, considered one of the forefathers of the science fiction novel; and, indeed, at the time that the novel was originally written, Verne's proposal definitely seemed "fantastic" -- a very egotistical and proper Englishman makes a bet at his gentleman's club (not Hooters!), that it is technically possible to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days.  His colleagues accept the bet, and the race begins promptly, the conveyances used generally being trains and boats, but also including elephants and wind-wagons (the balloon pictured on the cover of this edition is never employed in the book, but is a carry-over from the DAVID NIVEN film of the same title, also released in 1956).  And, although Verne's Englishman is not competing with other teams, he IS competing with TIME, as well as all the dangers and unexpected "detours" which he encounters along the way; plus, he is being trailed by a detective who also throws "roadblocks" along the route because the detective believes that the Englishman is a notorious thief.  Will the Englishman (and his partners) win the race?  Does he prevail against all the "detours" and "roadblocks," and does he ever discover an "Express Pass"?  And does he ever meet Phil at the final "Pit Stop"?  Ah, but that would be telling!
