If you're a fan of JAMES M. CAIN, JIM THOMPSON & DASHIELL HAMMETT, you'll enjoy reading the hard boiled thrillers written by the late HAROLD ADAMS, who wrote an extended series of mystery novels about former ex-convict CARL WILCOX, set in Depression-era South Dakota.  Carl occasionally makes a buck here and there painting signs; but more often than not,  he helps out at his family's rural hotel.  It's hard times for everyone in the country, though; and sometimes even South Dakota isn't far enough away from the bright lights to avoid the blood and murder of the big cities -- and, at those times, an ex-con might even have sharper eye and instincts for finding criminals than the local cops. . ..
