SPORTS: Big-time College Football Is on the Skids, By Sandy Padwe: What has Vince Gibson got to shout about? Sure, Kansas State football is big business. But a lot of people -- players included -- don't like it. Why, they ask, should the high pressure teams, the University of Florida, Ohio State and Arizona State among them, spend hundreds of thousands on a few games, and semi-educate their players? (Half those who go to the pros don't bring along college degrees.) Anyway, runaway costs, and the disillusionment of players with hard-sell coaches, may put the big-money boys out of business.
