Up for sale is the Hardy Kiwi ‘Ken’s Red’ (Actinidia purpurea x melanandra) in a 4" pot size. Clusters of sweet, smooth fruit are ready for harvest from September through October. The bite-sized, colorful fruit boasts reddish-purple skin and flesh and is eaten like a grape – skin and all. ‘Ken’s Red’ is a vigorous grower that should be planted in full sun with support to climb on. Like most female hardy kiwis, Ken’s Red needs a hardy male kiwi for cross-pollination. One male plant can pollinate up to 8 female plants.

 

Once plants are mature, fruit yield can reach 100 pounds in a single season. Hardy kiwi plants is highly resilient to diseases and pests. They are hardy in zones 4-9. A single plant is sold in a 4" pot, specifically for those who already have a male. The Actinidia arguta Ken's Red kiwi is smooth-skinned and grows in bunches. The fruit is about the size of a large grape, with red skin and red flesh, and is sweeter than most varieties. Very prolific.

 

You will need a male for your kiwi to bear fruit. Any male arguta is an ideal match for the Ken's Red female. One male plant is adequate to pollinate up to 8 female plants if it's centrally located. If planted in rows, a male can pollinate 3-4 females. Female plants produce fruit, while male plants do not produce fruit.
