Fukagawa (Jp.)

 

Pottery name within - due to its location - "Arita" ware. In 1875 Ezaiemon Fukagawa started to produce porcelain for export to the west. He named his company Koransha which means "The Company of the Scented Orchid." In 1894, the Fukagawa Porcelain Manufacturing Company was founded by Chuji Fukagawa in 1894 with the Fukagawa Porcelain trademark of Mount Fuji and a stream. Famous Fukagawa artists are Kinsaku Ide and Tosui Ninomiya whose pieces were exhibited in the International Exposition in Paris in 1900. The company has served as purveyor for the Imperial Household since 1910 and is still run by the Fukagawa family and makes some of the finest contemporary Imari.
