Takeshi Kitano, a one-man Japanese movie making machine stars in his alter ego persona (Beat Takeshi) as super-cool Otomo, a yakuza clean-up man, in this stylishly ultraviolent drama. A petty squabble between rival Yakuza clans triggers a series of increasingly violent tit-for-tat reprisals and power plays, finally erupting into all-out war in the Japanese underworld.

Writer-director-star Kitano brings some welcome deadpan humor to his role as an old-school enforcer in this stylish--and very grisly--gangster saga with so many double- and triple-crosses that, eventually, it's hard to follow the labyrinthine plot.
