ABOUT THIS BOOK: The Man Behind the Syndrome is in two sections. The first and largest section contains biographies and portraits of 100 physicians who have gained eponymous immortality by having their names applied to genetic syndromes. In each instance the development of the nomenclature is reviewed and key references to original publications and sources of biodata, such as obituaries, are provided. The second section of the book contains brief biographies of 110 eponymous physicians the majority of whom are still living. The names of these persons are well known to syndromologists but available information concerning their lives and careers is often scanty. The aim of the book is to provide the reader with information concerning "The Man Behind the Syndrome" and to satisfy curiosity as to how a particular condition gained its name.

The book is unique in its field and should become the definitive work on this topic.
