LOST in SPACE was a sci-fi TV series that originally aired on CBS, created by Irwin Allen and was based on the 1812 novel 'Swiss Family Robinson'. It actually beat 'Star Trek' in the ratings game every year. The show followed the adventures of the Robinson's, a pioneering space family thrown off-course by the stow-away Dr. Smith, trying to find their way home. The show devolved into monster-of-the-week episodes that became campy and comedic. And the Robot B9 would start displaying human characteristics such as laughter, sadness, and mockery at the delight of kids everywhere.
In this third season, a format change was introduced. This season had a differant set of opening credits and a new theme tune composed by John Williams as part of the shows new direction. In this season, the Jupter 2 travels freely in space in several episodes, visiting a planet but leaving at the end, or encountering an adventure in space. They visit new worlds with both crashed and controlled landings, as the family attempts to either return to Earth or their original destination, Alpha Centauri. A newly introduced "space pod" provides a means of transportation between the ship and passing planets, allowing for various escapades.
