Rare first edition of Prof. David Ansted's survey of the Ionian (Greek) islands in 1863. Ansted was an eminent Victorian geologist. In 1863, Britain was returning the Ionian Islands to Greece. Ansted visited them in order to record his perceptions before the handover. His book, more generalized than his typical publications, records his observations of the people as well as the geography and the geology.

Gilt-stamped and embossed maroon leather boards. Yellow endpapers. 9.25" x 6". 481 pages. Illustrated with a steel engraved frontis, 4 full-page maps, and in-text line drawings.
