Goofus glass is pressed glass which was decorated with unfired enamel paint in the early 20th century,
manufactured by several prominent glass companies and was relatively cheap. Originally given as premiums at carnivals, Goofus Glass was made from about 1890 to 1920 or so. Because it was cheaply made and cold painted, the paint chips easily. Thus, the popular name of this glass with unavoidable imperfections became Goofus Glass. It was the first carnival glass, preceding the iridized product known today as carnival glass.
This lovely bowl is made of thick heavy pressed glass. It has a ruffled edge, and is clear with a molded cherries, with branches & leaves pattern, painted in red & gold on the clear bowl. The red & gold cherries pattern stands out in a rich scarlet red and antiqued gold. It really stands out against the clear background.
GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION ~ No nicks, chips, cracks, flea bites, or repairs. Does have some of the normal paint flaking/wear, as to be expected on this type of cold painted pieces of this age/type.
It measures approx. 10 1/4" D x 2 3/8" H.
