BUCHA & NISSEN

Christmas Plates – Various Years Available

BUCHA & NISSEN commissioned and sold Christmas plates (JULE-AFTEN) from 1905 through 1931.  Over the years, they had different manufacturers produce the plates for them, so there is some small variation from year to year in size and quality.  Most were manufactured in Germany, although I believe a few may have been manufactured in Denmark.  One bears the actual maker's mark -- Schumann of Arzberg, Bavaria.  All of the plates in this listing are white porcelain with a blue picture illustrating a scene from the life of Christ.  All appear to be by the same artist, leading me to believe that they were taken from a book of Bible stories or perhaps from an illustrated edition of the Bible.  (If anyer recognizes them, I would greatly appreciate knowing the source!)

MOST of the plates are marked with the initials B&N on the back, some with a stylized combined monogram, some with the simple initials B&N.  Each plate photo is followed by a photo of the mark on the back of that plate.  All plates are slightly larger than 8 inches in diameter (~21 cm).  The 1907 though 1910 plates have the designs molded in relief and are about 8.5 inches in diameter.

As with many plate series, the first few in the series are more rare as it took some years to build up demand.  And, as with many series that ended in the 1930s, the last few plates are the most rare.  People had money during the Roaring Twenties, but the Great Depression put an end to a lot of things, including this plate series.

Bucha & Nissen, also known as Bucka & Nissen, was a Danish-German porcelain shop in Flensburg in South Schleswig (Danish: Slesvig), which began selling porcelain in 1846. The company was named Bucka & Nissen in 1849 and was a collaboration between Marcus Bucka and Hans Nissen.  The company sold, among other things, Bavarian dinnerware in Denmark.  After the war in 1864 when Germany seized and annexed both Northern and Southern Schleswig, Bucka & Nissen split up.  Nissen moved to Copenhagen and Marcus Bucka remained in Flensburg. The German part of company closed in 1937, while the Danish held until 1968.

EXCELLENT CONDITION -- no chips, cracks, repairs or other significant defects. See photos of the actual plates you will receive.  The 1907 has a small dark spot to the right of the sail; see close-up.  Stray white marks are light reflections, not defects.
