A history of Arlington National Cemetery from its 18th-century roots as part of the Arlington Estate--which belonged to relatives of Martha Washington, and was the place where Mary Custis (Mrs. Robert E. Lee) lived and was married-- through its capture by Union forces in 1861 and eventual sale to the US government in 1883. Illustrated with 8 pencil sketches by Francis K. MacNerhany.
