![]() National Theater in Munich is the subject of this 1987 Rosenthal Christmas Plate, the 14th plate in Rosenthal “Classic Rose” Christmas series which began in 1974 as a continuation of the Rosenthal “Traditional Christmas” series, which ran from 1910 to 1974. Multi-color underglaze hand-painted design on white porcelain, diameter approximately 8.5 inches (22 cm). Pierced foot for hanging wire. Inscription (in gold): WEIHNACHTEN (German for Christmas Night) 1987. Design by Helmut Drexler. Marked on the back: WEIHNACTSTELLER (Christmas plate), UNTERGLASUR (Underglaze), and HANDGEMALT (Hand-painted). Original Issue Price in 1987 was $210. The present National Theater in Munich was opened in 1963 and replaced the previous National Theater which was bombed in 1943. The new theater recreates Karl von Fischer's original 1823 neo-classical design, although on a slightly larger scale. It is now the home of the Bavarian State Opera, and the Bavarian State Ballet.
