The tree originates from the Moluccas Spice Islands of Indonesia and is cultivated mainly there and in the West Indies.
History of nutmeg
Nutmeg has a very interesting history, dating from the 1st century AD.
It was a valuable spice, and it was even the cause of war. The Dutch conquered the Banda Islands, and ended up slaughtering them to monopolize the nutmeg trade.
This resulted in the founding of the Dutch East India Company, a merger of several Dutch trading companies.
During their occupation of the East Indies, the British took nutmeg seedlings and planted them in various other tropical places under British colonial control.
Nutmeg plantations sprang up in Singapore, Ceylon, Bencoolen (southwestern Sumatra) and Penang (now Malaysia). From there, they spread to Zanzibar, East Africa and the Caribbean islands of Grenada.
We have to thank them for spreading this wonderful spice all over the world!
