Shaft, performed by Soul Mann and The Brothers, was the soundtrack for the crime action thriller movie of the same name. The plot revolves around a private detective named John Shaft, played by Richard Roundtree, who is hired by a Harlem mobster to rescue his daughter from the Italian mobsters who kidnapped her. Hayes was also nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Dramatic Score and for Best Original Song with the 'Theme from Shaft.' When he won for Best Original Song, it was the first time an African American composer had won an Academy Award
