Baroque Frame
Engraved we believe by Auguste Gaspard Louis Boucher Desnoyers(?) Its not marked on the engraving. It might be under the frame. Please make your own research and its most likely by Desnoyers.
Original paiting was in a full length this engraving captures half of the length.
Baroque frame is original and has some conditional issues. Its chipping in some places and needs to be preserved. Kostly in good solid shape and can be enjoyed as is but best to touch up. Gorgeous molding as you can see. We wont be doing excessive cleaning frame is fragile. Sides have small mirror parts. Exellent piece as a decor.
Rare find.
Rare antique engraving of 'Napoleon Le Grand' by Auguste Gaspard Louis Boucher Desnoyers (1779–1857), after Baron François Gérard. His engravings are exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The British Museum and so and command high prices in the print world.
Desnoyers was born before the French Revolution and worked right through the Napoleonic era. He was one of the most eminent of modern French engravers. This portrait of Napoleon, after Gerard's painting of 1805, is one of his most accomplished engravings and is extraordinary for the level of detail it portrays. It shows the emperor at the height of his powers dressed in the full regalia of state standing near his throne.
In 1804, Napoleon personally chose Desnoyers to engrave Gérard's portrait of himself as Emperor of France.
The print took four years to complete, and was issued in three states; it was exhibited at the Salon of 1810. Desnoyers is said to have been paid 2000 livres, together with the return of the plate to sell to his own profit after 600 impressions had been printed.
