THE MURDERED MAN'S
WIDOW WAS AN ALLURING WOMAN
Adele Fortescue's appeal was obvious, not subtle. It simply said to every man, "Here am I. I'm a woman." She spoke and moved and breathed sex.
"I've been trying to get in touch with you since this morning," Inspector Neele said, "Your husband was taken to St. Jude's Hospital."
"You don't mean-he isn't dead?" She fumbled with her bag, pulled out a handkerchief and sobbed in a manner that was almost convincing.
"I'll send someone to you," said Inspector Neele, watching her closely as he went to the door. She likes men, he thought, but she'll always like money better. The handkerchief did not quite obscure her mouth. On her lips, he noted, there was a very faint smile.
