Born William Sidney Porter in 1862, O. Henry was known throughout the world by his pseudonym, and kept his identity a secret from all but a few friends.
O. Henry grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, but eventually moved west, where he worked as a bank teller in Austin, Texas. Despite conflicting evidence, he was charged with embezzlement in 1894 and sent to the Ohio State Penitentiary.
While serving his prison term he began to write the stories that made him famous.
O. Henry died in 1910 and is buried in Asheville, North Carolina.
