Antique Indonesian Style Majapahit Standing Bronze Brahma Statue - 31cm/12"

An antique Java style standing bronze Brahma sculpture in the 13th century Majapahit style. Brahma is the Hindu God of Creation and one of the Trimurti, the others being Vishnu and Shiva.

Brahma's four faces look North, South, East and West. The Brahma is stood samabhanga on a round lotus petal pedestal which is itself stood on a decorated pedestal. A Chinthe or Lion, temple guardian, can be seen at the base of the pedestal. 

His hands hold a variety of items including a lotus bud, Gada or Mace, a fly whisk and trident. 

He wears a richly bejewelled dohti and upavita. His face has a downcast gaze. Upon his head he wears a decorative Javanese style tiara in front of his Kirita-Makuta or tall conical crown. This symbolises control over Positive and Negative attitudes. On his forehead he has a third eye or urna.

He has an aquiline nose and elongated earlobes with large ear rings. Brahma is backed by an aureole with a beaded border and flaming rim, topped by a decorative finial. The demonstrates his divinity. The sculpture has a wonderful verdigris patina.
