French actress Sarah Bernhardt played the lead role of Floria in the five-act drama of La Tosca.  It was written for her by French playwright Victorien Sardou.

While performing in Milan, the audience included Giacomo Puccini. He approached Sardou and asked if he could turn La Tosca into an opera.  Sardou was not happy at an Italian creating an opera from his French play, but after some reluctance, he agreed and Tosca premiered in Rome, in January 1900.

Bernhardt starred in many popular French plays in the 19th century and also made several theatrical tours around the world.   She was one of the first French actresses to make sound recordings and act in motion pictures.

PS:

Did you know that vintage art was never created to fit our modern frame sizes?  Most original work is much longer, thinner, or too short to fit a standard frame.

Sadly, many print suppliers crop vintage art to make it fit today's sizes, but this risks losing beautiful parts of the artwork.

I believe that you should be able to view the old artwork in its full glory.  And so you'll find many of the prints here have non-standard white borders.

These allow you to crop the print to the size you want.  Or frame it as it is in a glass clipframe, or with a contrasting matt that brings the artwork to life.

Your choice of frame makes a world of difference to your artwork too.  Enjoy your print.
