Description
This is an unused vintage 5/8 inch diameter by 24 feet 2 inch long soft chestnut tones 6 strand mane hair Mecate. This mecate has a really nice soft feel and has a substantial 3/8 mane hair core. Mecates are used on both snaffle bits and hackamores. The horse responds to the feel of the horse hair on their neck much better than to other materials. The little hairs also signal the horse when they touch their neck, and when they touch under their jaws. The traditional material and patterns also look exceptionally good on horses. Mane hair is very strong, yet not as heavy as other materials..."lighter mecate, lighter horse". Mane hair, unlike synthetic material, is not broken down by ultraviolet radiation and as natural animal fibers, mane hair mecates will soften with age and use. Since mane hair is slick, hard and relatively non-porous, items made from them stay cleaner longer and are easier to clean when they do need it.
This mecate measures at 24 feet 2 inches which is considered a 24 foot length. Better quality Mecates are always twisted with a core and this one does have a mane hair core. Mecates without a "heart" or core have a spongy feel and are lesser in quality and will not hold up over time. A Mecate without a core may be soft in the rider's hands, but it is not going to last and the "feel" of the rope will not maintain.
The color of this Mecate is so pretty and it will make a great addition to your vintage show tack collection and will look great in any show ring setting especially on all those red based horses. A Mecate, made and maintained well, will last a lifetime and longer. There is nothing quite like a good mane hair mecate. They have weight, but not too much, they are balanced, and a truly good one has a life of its own.
