Wood turned bowl handmade on the lathe using repurposed Spalted Maple from the Adirondacks. Spalting refers to the process of decay breaking down dead wood. If turned at the right moment before the wood is too broken down, spalting produces wood of exceptional beauty with very distinctive colors delineated by fine black lines that appear to be drawn by hand. Spalted Maple is rare and each piece is visually distinct and unique.

In addition on this unique piece, the wood started to show defects in the spalted wood which gave me the opportunity to remove those areas, pour some epoxy resin orange iridescent mica and then turn again. Then made sure to core enough the inside of the bowl to get to the resin from both sides so that some light to be able to go through those areas.

The finish is first done on the lathe with a mixture of shellac and boiled linseed oil using a friction polish technique to provide a light glossy appearance and then a thin coat of polyurethane is applied for durability. The interior is not made to hold water and this bowl is rather recommended for object, fruit or display but not for overly wet item.

The LED light string battery-operated inside the bowl as shown on some of pictures is included in the price and can be very easily removed as desired.

Each piece is custom designed in term of shape and wood pattern with each listing being unique and to be removed when sold, making it truly one of a kind. And it can be further personalized for free by adding a wood engraved short message on the bottom of the piece. Just contact me to define details.

The little imperfection of the wood and of its natural grain, which I am trying to show as much as possible through the different pictures displayed, is what is giving character to this piece.
