Danilov, a half-human, half-demon sent to Earth to cause trouble for mankind, finds humans far too engaging for this task and instead spends his time playing the concert viola, entertaining demonic friends, and pursuing the beautiful Natasha. This all leads to trouble: a summons from the order of Demons to explain himself. Worse still, his beloved viola has been stolen. As he prepares for the summons, Danilov must contend with headaches both demonic and human: a visiting demon friend's unpredictable behavior and the unrelenting demands of his (all-too-human) ex-wife. Orlov has written a generally engaging first novel that satirizes human behavior, individual and bureaucratic. One wishes the novel had a bit more structure, but this is nevertheless a solid work. Recommended, with hopes for more from Orlov
