Brian Garfield, the author of DEATH WISH (which in 1974 was filmed under the same title with CHARLES BRONSON) does it again with THE HIT. A Las Vegas organized crime kingpin has been assassinated, and his walk-in vault, filled with millions in cash, plus incriminating photos and documents about well-known politicians and celebrities, has been emptied -- and the prime suspects are a former girlfriend of the mob boss, and her one-time lover. The mob gives the two of them 48 hours to solve the murder and theft -- or else suffer the consequences. A very well-written nail biter from the always dependable Brian Garfield -- and this one's better than average. A real overlooked modern hard-boiled thriller.
