Knuckles the Echidna is a video game character who appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series released by Sega. He is one of the most significant characters in the series, first as a rival, and later a friend of the main character. He appears in spin-off games, comics, and a feature film. His debut appearance was in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in 1994, where he was presented as an antagonist who was tricked by Doctor Eggman. But since then has become a main character and friend of Sonic the Hedgehog. Knuckles is a 16-year-old red anthropomorphic echidna, who is both physically powerful and highly resilient. In most Sonic games, his skills include climbing on ledges or walls and gliding in the air. Knuckles is the eighteenth guardian of the Floating Island, and a member of the Brotherhood of Guardians, a secret society that defends the island. He lives on the planet Mobius on the flying landmass known as Angel Island. He is supported by the Chaotix, and often works together with Sonic the Hedgehog and the Freedom Fighters. When he was first introduced he was a lone defender of the island, Knuckles was recently abandoned by his father, Locke; he was later iconically tricked by Robotnik into believing that Sonic and Tails were on their way to steal the Chaos Emerald and its powers. After a short melee, Robotnik blatantly betrayed Knuckles, causing him to join Sonic in a begrudging team-up, which eventually grew into a strong friendship. Not too long after that, he formed the Chaotix along with Vector, out of the few refugee inhabitants on Angel Island at the time and would leave the island to their care if he ever had to leave. The Chaotix at the time were Knuckles the Echidna, Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, Mighty the Armadillo, Charmy Bee, Heavy, and Bomb, but later saw the addition of Ray the Flying Squirrel, Julie-Su the Echidna, and Saffron Bee (Charmy's betrothed), while Heavy and Bomb departed and later joined the King's Secret Service.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an upcoming adventure film based on the video game franchise Sonic the Hedgehog published by Sega. It is the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), with Jeff Fowler directing from a script written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, based on the story created by Casey and Miller. The cast includes Ben Schwartz, Colleen O'Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, and Jim Carrey. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 follows Sonic and Tails as they try to prevent Doctor Eggman and Knuckles the Echidna from finding the Master Emerald.
Following the success of the first film, and with plans for a film series, Paramount Pictures announced the sequel in May 2020. Filming took place from March to June 2021 in Vancouver and Hawaii. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on April 8, 2022, by Paramount Pictures in association with Sega Sammy Group.
In February 2022, Sega and Paramount confirmed that a third film, alongside a Knuckles spin-off series, are in development. The Knuckles spin-off would feature Elba reprising his role, releasing in 2023 on Paramount's streaming service, Paramount+.
Knuckles Paramount+ Series Casts Christopher Lloyd, Cary Elwes, and More
The Knuckles Paramount+ series has cast several new actors, including Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, Cary Elwes, Stockard Channing, and Rob Huebel. According to reporting from Deadline, "character details are being kept under wraps," so it's currently unclear if they will be doing voice work for characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, or if they will be appearing as human characters. The series will see Idris Elba reprising his role from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, while Adam Pally and Tika Sumpter will also be returning as their characters from the Paramount films.
Knuckles does not currently have a release date, but the streaming series is expected to arrive ahead of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is currently slated to release on December 20, 2024. In the series, Knuckles will be training Wade Whipple (Pally) in "the ways of the Echidna warrior." The deputy of Green Hills, Wade has been portrayed as good-natured but bumbling, and he could probably use a bit more training! Little else is known about the series at this time.
Knuckles first appeared in the Sega Genesis video game Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which released in 1994. In that game, Knuckles starts out as an antagonist, before becoming friends with Sonic. A similar situation played out in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie, in which Doctor Robotnik tricked Knuckles into a rivalry with the blue blur. By the end of the film, Knuckles became friends with Sonic and Tails, though it seems he still has quite a bit to learn about Earth.
Over the years, Sega has introduced a number of Sonic characters, and it would be difficult to feature all of them in the live-action movies. The Knuckles streaming series could be the perfect place to introduce additional characters, such as the Chaotix. Whether any of today's newly announced cast members will be voicing members of the Sonic family remains to be seen, but hopefully Paramount will have much more to reveal soon!
