The book of Job begins with a prologue (Job 1-2), which describes a wager between The Satan and God, in which Satan (the adversary) tells Hashem that Job (Iyov) –a particularly pious man–will abandon his piety and curse God if all his wealth and well-being are taken away. At the end of the prologue, Job has suffered many terrible losses, including his children and his health, but he nevertheless remains “patient,” refusing to speak against Hashem God.

Job is a righteous, wealthy and successful man, yet God allows Satan to bring upon Job almost unbearable calamities. His children and his wealth are all taken from him, and he is wracked with suffering.

Job accepts, not because of logic, but because he realizes that he is mortal and cannot understand Divine wisdom or Divine justice.
