Rumsey Monument Shepherdstown West Virginia Overlooking Potomac 1915 Vintage Postcard
This magnificent monument overlooks the Potomac, where James Rumsey operated the steamboat in 1787. Selected in 1915 by the State of West Virginia, the Rumsey Society, promoted by bronze tablet, tells the story in honor of James Rumsey, inventor of the steamboat. In October 1783, Rum made the first successful application of steam to the practical purpose of navigation on the Potomac River at Shepherdstown, Virginia, about 300 yards above this site.
