Vintage Tarahumara Raramuri Nacimiento Indian Doll Nativity Folk Art Hand Carved Wood 9 Figures Stable Creche Mexico
Unique vintage hand crafted Tarahumara Raramuri Nacimiento Indian Doll Themed Wooden Mexican Folk Art Nativity 9 Figure Creche Diorama Set.
This awesome natural mixed media creation is made with incredible care and detail. It includes a stable/creche made out of sticks arranged to resemble a log cabin-like structure with a tree bark covered roof. The interior of the stable is decorated with a mix of dried plants, moss/grass, rocks, a pottery water pot and a hand woven basket.
Inside are 9 hand carved wood figures that include 2 adults(presumably Joseph and Mary), 3 children (Shepherds) and 1 infant (Jesus) lying in a manger, and 3 animals (a sheep, cow and donkey). The people are all dressed in colorful remnant rag fabric clothes and wearing red tie headbands. The infant is lying on a wooden manger.
The entire Nativity scene pieces are glued in place and the set is mounted on an unfinished pine wood base.
This is a rare and wonderful vintage folk art piece!
Measures approx. 11 1/2" L x 7" D x 6"H.
I believe this piece is hand crafted by the Tarahumara Indians, or self-called Raramuri, one of the largest indigenous tribes in North America, and who live in the Copper Canyon region in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico.
In excellent vintage condition with expected minor wear and a few handmade imperfections. Please see pictures for more details.
