40 Seeds Wax Gourd – Fuzzy Winter Melon, Benincasa Hispida

This distinctive wax gourd, characterized by its oblong shape, can grow to a substantial weight of up to 20 pounds. Its light green skin is covered with extremely fine hairs, which develop into a white, waxy powder as the gourd matures. This natural waxy coating not only protects the melon but also significantly extends its storage life, making it an excellent choice for long-term preservation.

Cultivation Instructions: Wax gourds require a long and warm growing season to thrive. Start by preparing soil that is both fertile and well-drained. Sow the seeds in late spring or early summer, ideally after the last frost, in a location that receives ample sunlight. To promote germination, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours prior to planting to soften the hard seed coat.

For planting, use a hill planting technique: create mounds of soil that are approximately 1 foot in diameter and 3-4 inches tall. Space these mounds 4-6 feet apart. Plant 1-2 seeds in each mound and ensure the soil remains consistently moist throughout the growing season. Fertilize as necessary to support healthy growth.

Hand pollination may be needed to ensure fruit set. To improve air circulation and make harvesting easier, you can train the plants to climb a vertical support. Alternatively, allow the vines to sprawl on the ground. Once harvested, store the fruit in a dry, cool environment during the winter months, and avoid placing it directly on concrete surfaces to prevent spoilage.
