This movie brings me to tears every time I see it. Billy Eliot's mother had recently deceased. His new responsibilities include, satisfying his father's wishes, looking after his wandering grandmother, and taking his older brother's verbal abuse. Little Billy was sent for boxing lessons with the rest of the little boys. It just so happens that there aren't enough facilities to go around. Ballet is practiced in the other side of the gym by a group of young girls. Billy can't help himself. The music takes a hold of his body's motions and he is unable to concentrate on boxing. Billy's father and brother are strong participants in the coal miner's union. In between the pressures of family and his newly found passion, Billy struggles to find a balance. His father considered ballet as feminine. His brother angers the ballet instructor and accuses her of scheming. On top of everything, Billy's childhood friend, Michael, is coming forth with his homosexuality and shows a smidge of affection. Billy has a similar moment with his instructor's daughter, Debbie. Billy's father thinks about his late wife and decides to give Billy a shot at something else, rather than a future in coal mining. Everyone in the film was perfect. The dynamics of the actors as a family was very believable. My favorite character is the father, (Gary Lewis). He gave a very moving performance and his acting is superb. I recommend this movie for anyone. I know it is rated R for profanity and whatnot, but honestly, I see no harm in labeling it PG-13 instead. If you cannot hear the film, you can see it and it's excellence of cinematography. If you cannot see the film, you can definitely hear it. It has one of the best soundtracks of all time.
