It was originally built in the Middle Ages and is situated on a precipice 410 meters above the town. The castle has significant historical and cultural importance. It was the home of St. Elisabeth of Hungary. She lived there in the early 13th century. Martin Luther translated the New Testament of the Bible into German while staying at the castle. The Wartburg Festival of 1817 was a notable event in German history. And Sngerkrieg, the legendary Minstrels Contest is said to have taken place there. The castles architecture is quintessentially medieval, and it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Today, it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Thuringia.
