In 1920, he emigrated with his mother to Harbin, where he graduated from the gymnasium and the Faculty of Law (1935), after which he began to study Chinese and Chinese law. The first poems were published in 1928, and translations from English and Chinese appeared in print in the late 1930s. In 1932, together with Larissa Andersen and other young poets who lived in Harbin, he joined the Chinese Literature Association headed by Alexey Achair.
