Famous Giovanni Noto (b.1902 - d.1985) was a supreme world-famous master Italian carver who managed the renowned *Giovanni Apa Studio in Italy as artistic director from 1947 until his death in 1985.
He was known to his students as the "Professor" and was also called "Michelangelo's Chisel" for his outstanding and notable artistic talents.
*Giovanni Apa Studio:
In 1848, Giovanni Apa,
who was also a supreme Master Italian Goldsmith, founded his 'Giovanna Apa Studio' in Torre del Greco, Italy, a town on the Gulf of Naples at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Ever since the time of the Bourbon Kingdom of Naples, this region has been known worldwide as a center of excellence in artistic coral and jewelry works.
*Many Cameos bearing the "G.Noto" signature were allowed to be signed as such by many of Giovanni Noto's student artists in Torre del Greco... but only upon his overseer approval.
He personally supervised all of the artworks and actually hand-carved various portions to various degrees of each piece for teaching purposes.
This Exquisitely Fine Piece is extremely well-executed. The total workmanship is far superior to that found typical of his students.
*A European Appraiser's opinion: due to its incredible craftsmanship and appearance, Giovanni Noto carved this very fine exquisite Cameo mostly in its entirety even if the G.Noto signature was added by a student (as almost often was done) in Noto's studio at Torre del Greco.
================================
*** Cameo Shell of Italy is a traditional Cameo Artist's Canvas derived from the Flame or Bullmouth Helmet Cassis Rufa, a marine mollusk found on the African coast commonly called the "Carnelian Shell."
