Why the stamps were issued:  To cover the Presorted Standard Mail Rate used by bulk mailers.

About the stamp designs:  The stamps picture pencil and watercolor illustrations of barns with large American flags painted on the side of them.  The backgrounds represent different seasons. Original artwork by illustrator Stephanie Bower.

First Day City:  There was no First Day of Issue Ceremony for these stamps, but the First Day of Issue postmarks were from Halifax, Pennsylvania, just one town in America that's home to a barn with a flag painted on the side of it.

History the stamp represents:  Flags on barns are about as American as you can get.  Old Glory prominently painted on the broad side of a barn can make hearts swell with pride.  What’s better than seeing the Red, White, and Blue out in a field to remind us of our patriotism?

According to Stacee Lynn, The Barndominium Lady, “A barn is an American tradition.  It harkens back to a time of self-reliance and independence.  It reminds us that, even as times change, we have always been a nation of growers, builders, and doers…  They represent our willingness to work hard and create a nation of plenty.”

The flag stirs up feelings of freedom, liberty, justice, and a fierce loyalty to America.  Since 1949, when President Harry Truman signed legislation designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day, people have been hanging a flag on their houses.  What better way to show pride in our country than having the flag front and center for all to see?

In 2022, the USPS released four different stamps with flags painted on barns in other seasons.  These stamps were released to cover the bulk-mail rate.  So, whether painted or sewn, faded or bright, take a moment to stop and give the American flag the reflection it deserves.
