Countess Mathilde Mara de Bninska, a Bavarian-born socialite and philanthropist who lived in London, Paris and New York before moving to New Hampshire, died Dec. 22. She was 96.

The countess, who received her title from her fifth husband, Count Victor Vitold Jean Maria Bnin-Bninski, a Polish nobleman, bought Wentworth Castle in Jackson in 1959.
