THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER takes as its premise something that most teen dramas save for sweeps week: a pregnant 15 year old. Created by Brenda Hampton (7TH HEAVEN), the ABC Family series follows freshman Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley) as she navigates the treacherous nine months to birth. At home, she's flanked by a supportive mother (Molly Ringwald) and a philandering father (Mark Derwin); at school, she's wooed by the sweet-hearted Ben (Kenny Baumann), a boy who didn't get her pregnant but seems willing to help her raise a child. Hampton surrounds her lead couple with plenty of high school drama and every perspective on teen sex, including a promiscuous siren, a "True Love Waits" Christian cheerleader, and plenty of kids keen on the idea but frightened at the actual prospect. Never heavy-handed or titillating for the sake of it, THE SECRET LIFE OF THE AMERICAN TEENAGER is a kinder and more balanced portrayal of adolescence than TV typically affords. This release includes every episode from the debut season.
