Captorhinus, meaning ‘Capture Nose’, is a prehistoric genus of captorhinid reptiles that lived during the Permian period. Its remains are known from North America, Europe, India and Africa.
Some species of Captorhinus were around forty centimetres long, with other species growing to double that length. The other difference between the species were that some had multiple rows of marginal teeth where as others only had one row, though they all possessed prominent chisel-shaped posterior teeth. The arrangement of the teeth at the back of the mouth suggest that Captorhinus mashed its food in its mouth before swallowing.
