Headley & Farmer Antique Alligator and Brass Doctor’s Bag likely mid-1800s
Lovely large Alligator Doctor's Bag by Headley & Farmer, no date other than "18" above "Headley & Farmer Makers" on the bottom, but likely mid-1800s as that's when Headley & Farmer were active, seemingly primarily as an American maker of trunks.
Approximately 18" long at base , narrows to 16 inches long at the top, bottom piece is 8" wide, but bag poofs to
about 11 inches wide above base, and then narrows to about 7 inches midway and then narrow to close
at top. About 10.5 inches tall.
Solid brass sliding clasp and fittings with dual
flip down brass top locks
opens and closes well without the key and the bag is in overall good shape for age, but shows use and has some issues. The handle is broken, the bottom flap on one side needs to be re sewn down and the seams on that side have come apart and in one place a charming home-made stitch repair is visible. The leather interior of the bag is mostly good, some tearing of one of the side pockets.
The bottom interior and exterior are in good shape, the bottom has 5 brass feet that protect the bottom. The main damage are the side flaps detaching and the broken handle. Definitely could be restored and used or displayed as a beautiful conversation / accent piece.
