Description
This item is a 1/144 scale model kit of an MIL-8 Russian transport helicopter.
The Mil Mi-8 (Russian: Ми-8, NATO reporting
name: (Hip HIPPO) is a medium twin-turbine helicopter, originally designed by the Soviet Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) in the 1960s and introduced into the Soviet Air Force in 1968. Russian production of the aircraft model still continues as of 2024.[1] In addition to its most common role as a transport helicopter, the Mi-8 is also used as an airborne command post, armed gunship, and reconnaissance platform.
The Mi-8 is the world's most-produced helicopter, with over 17,000 units used by over 50 countries. As of 2015, when combined with the related Mil Mi-17, the two helicopters are the third most common operational military aircraft in the world.
This kit comes with Y-Kraft decals YouTube has several videos of this aircraft in different paint schemes that you should watch for excellent reference! You can also search IMAGES for many more results.
This item is manufactured by "D4" as a "puzzle model" and is designed, we suppose, to be put together and taken apart over and over? But being the only model of this aircraft we have ever seen in 1/144 scale, we offer it as a serious scale model to be built by skilled hobbyists who have the tools and materials to give it justice. It actually may be that the "puzzle" design is to produce a model to be built without requiring cement. remember the "glue-sniffing" panic of the 60's? And the discouraging of "war toys" of that era?
It is very well made with fine panel lines, and can be assembled without glue. It will take some skill and a little patience, but take your time, and be ready will some cement just in case.
We recommend you acquire some Squadron Putty or equivalent. One tube will last for years for a busy 1/144 model kit builder. Just put the cap back on when you are done!
The kit is very nicely made and includes a stand. Another interesting feature is that the landing gear parts are molded in CLEAR plastic which we've never seen before, and serves to enhance the appearance of the model on its stand. Of course you can paint the landing gear if you wish.
We provide decals for the kits from Y-Kraft in Japan.
Some "D-4" kit reviews indicate there are no landing gear doors provided, so we include some sheet styrene plastic for creating the landing gear doors for some of the kits.
Note: This kit is not in it's original box, it comes bagged with the "kit box art" inside and its instructions.
