FRONT COVER
"ENGELMANN'S PRICKLY PEAR" BY JOSEF MUENCH. 4x5 Linhof Super Technika camera; daylight Ektachrome; f.18 at t/cth sec.; 5" Schneider Xenar lens; April; sunny day. Photo taken in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, south of Ajo, in Southern Arizona. The Ajo Mountains always make a dramatic background for a picture in this arboreal desert and here they add weight to the picture as pads of Opuntia Engelmannii lift above almost a rosette of the flowers. This Prickly Pear can be seen in flower over a wide area in the state and provides much color.
OPPOSITE PAGE
"A SAGUARO IN BLOOM" BY JOSEF MUENCH. 4x5 Linhof Super Technika camera; daylight Ektachrome; 1.29 at 1/: sec.; ;" Schneider Xenar lens; April; late afternoon light. Taken in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Southern Arizona. The flowers of the Saguaro (Caritegiea gigantea), Arizona's state flower, seem like little faces--symbolically the face of the desert. To the left is a fine specimen of the featured cactus of the arca--the Organ Pipe (Lemairocereus thurberi) with silvery looking Staghorn Cholla scattered among more Saguaros and Ocotillos over which the Ajo Mountains stand guard. This National Monument encloses one of Arizona's most spectacular desert areas.
