Luke Doucet and the White Falcon - Blood's Too Rich (CD 2008) VG++ 9/10

With it's bluesy riffs and 1970s style artwork, Blood's Too Rich harkens back to Doucet's days fronting surf-noir trio Veal and to his youth spent admiring Neil Young, Howlin' Wolf and Stray Cats. The album also retells his tales of living at the heart of Country - Nashville, TN - where he wrote the record in early 2007. The album also introduces The White Falcon, the infamous white Gretsch and band. Blood's Too Rich won Contemporary Album of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Vancouver multi-instrumentalist Luke Doucet--perhaps best known as Sarah McLachlan's guitar player and as the former frontman of the critically heralded group Veal--is a fiercely gifted musician, and his fourth solo album Blood's Too Rich shows off his talents beautifully. The album overflows with sonic atmosphere, with a vibe that resonates somewhere between the Eagles' Hotel California and the twangy jams of a good Steve Earle tune. Not surprisingly, Doucet surrounds himself with an equally talented band, the White Falcon which notably includes his wife, the respected singer/songwriter Melissa McClelland on backing vocals. Guest contributors add to the alt-country agenda, a Toronto-heavy team ranging from Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy and Basil Donovan to Crash Vegas Colin Cripps. There are a host of driving-down-a-dusty-Southern-highway style-tunes, from the title track to the blistering Doors-affected jam at the end of First Day (In the New Hometown) to the harmony-heavy The Day Rick Danko Died. In fact, extended jams are pretty much the trademark on Blood's Too Rich, appearing throughout and ultimately tying it all together.
