FEATURES:
INTRODUCING THE SIXTY-EIGHT ARTISTS whose works have been selected for the AMERICAN ARTIST GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY NATIONAL ART COMPETITION EXHIBITION.

PROFILES: In this section, American Artist portrays the life-styles of ten individuals in the exhibition who are overcoming the struggle to become professional artists.

STILL LIFES: With an introduction by one of the competition judges, distinguished still-life artist John Stuart Ingle, this section presents the work of ten artists dedicated to the rich tradition of painting still lifes.

LANDSCAPES: Contributing Editor of American Artist and competition judge Mary Carroll Nelson introduces six landscape artists whose works are characterized by, as she puts it, "good craftsmanship, excellence in detail, and a tendency toward precision.".

DRAWINGS: This article, a look at seven artists who utilize charcoal, graphite, colored pencil, and ink in the works that have been selected, records the variety and vitality of the drawings in the exhibition.

THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: Five watercolor artists offer vivid descriptions of their techniques, their life-styles, and their inspirations.

FIGURES: Kenneth W. Marlow, winner of the Best-of-Show award in the 1985 American Artist National Art Competition, shares his experience as a judge in this year's contest in an introduction to the works and personalities of eight figure and portrait artists.

PRINTS: Six winners who have successfully established themselves in the medium of printmaking discuss their work and lives.

GALLERY: In this section, American Artist presents reproductions of the works of the remaining sixteen competition winners, as well as a complete list of all the artists selected for the exhibition.
