Malagueta is a type of chili pepper commonly used in Brazilian cuisine, with the scientific name Capsicum frutescens. It is believed to have originated in Brazil, but has also been introduced to other parts of the world, such as Africa and Portugal.

The Malagueta pepper has a Scoville rating of around 50,000 to 100,000 units, which places it in the medium to hot range of chili peppers. It takes about 100 days for the plant to mature and reach a height of 2 to 4 feet. The leaves are usually green, and the fruits are small and tapered, typically measuring 0.5 to 1.5 inches in length.

The peppers start off green and turn red when ripe, but they are often harvested while still green. The flavor of the Malagueta pepper is described as fruity and slightly smoky, with a moderate to high level of heat.

Malagueta peppers are commonly used in Brazilian dishes such as stews, marinades, and hot sauces. In Portugal, they are used to make piri-piri sauce, which is often served with grilled chicken.

One interesting fact about the Malagueta pepper is that it was once used as a form of currency in some parts of Brazil, particularly in the state of Bahia. It was highly valued for its heat and flavor, and could be traded for other goods and services.
