THE COVER Shown beside a choice stock blank is a custom rifle based on a Ruger No. One action and made up in the Pacific Northwest, where this photograph was taken, for J.V. "Jack" Slack, Lake Oswego, Oreg. Jack Frye, Bremerton, Wash., barrelled the action with a Shilen blank in .223 Remington, 1-in-12" twist. Earl Milliron, Portland, Oreg., fashioned the stock of California English walnut. The result delighted Slack twice over because it proved both "beautiful and an excellent performer," giving 3/4" groups with military loads and one .241" five-shot group at 100 yds. with select handloads.
