Several years ago I saved asparagus seeds from my late grandparents' garden. This was from plants they had planted many years ago. I do not know what variety they planted, whether it was heirloom or not, I do not know. Pictures of the spears in my hand are of the asparagus from my grandparents' garden. I planted the seeds in my own garden. Last picture is of my plants in late summer. My plants are only several years old at this time. I have harvested a minimal amount from them the past few years. This past year I saved seeds from my own plants and that is what I will be sending you.
I will ship the seeds in their red berry. I don't know, but I suppose the berry may help to preserve the viability of the seeds. Regardless I think the red berries are pretty! The seeds are not difficult to remove from the berry but if you prefer to have yours removed before shipping I will gladly do so for you. Just send me a message. I find it really varies how many seeds are in a berry. Some berries may only contain 1 seed (generally more) the one I opened in the photo had 5 seeds. I will send you 12 berries. I do highly recommend you remove the seeds from the berries before planting! I have tried it both ways, with or without the berry, for several different seeds. I have a feeling critters find and eat the berries including the seeds inside! As it seems there is better germination from the individual seeds.
I did a germination test with these seeds. I wrapped 10 seeds in a moist paper towel and kept them in the refrigerator for about 5 1/2 weeks. I then brought them into room temperature, after only a few days 9 out of the 10 where beginning to sprout.
