Charles "Lucky" Luciano, born Salvatore Lucania was an Italian-born American mobster, considered the father or modern organized crime in the United States for the establishment of the first Commission. He was for many years, the head of the modern Genovese crime family. Along with his associate, Meyer Lansky,  he was instrumental to the development of the National Crime Syndicate in the United States.

In 2936 Luciano was convicted on prostitution charges but was paroled and deported at the end of World War II. Exceled in Italy, Luciano spent his last years helping the Italian and American Mafias make a coordinated push into narcotics. He died of a heart attack at the age of 64 in Naples, Campania, Italy.

TIM NEWARK is the author of Mafia Allies and the editor of Military Illustrated, and he has contributed book reviews to the Financial Times, Time Out, and the Daily Telegraph. He has worked as a scriptwriter and consultant for seven TV documentary series for the History Channel and BBC Worldwide. He lives in London.
