OLD TIME RADIO
- 2 CD - 78 mp3 - Total Playtime: 25:11:20
A collection
of female detectives in the old time radio. Here
some of the shows:
Candy Matson was the
private eye star of Candy Matson, YUkon 2-8209, an
NBC West Coast show which first aired in March 1949
and was created by Monty Masters. He cast his wife,
Natalie Parks, in the title role
of
this sassy, sexy PI. Her understated love interest,
Lt. Ray Mallard, was played by Henry Leff while her
assistant and best pal, aptly named Rembrandt
Watson, was the voice of Jack Thomas.
Every show opened with a ringing telephone and our
lady PI answering it with "Candy Matson, YU 2-8209"
and then the organ swung into the theme song,
"Candy". Each job took Candy from her apartment on
Telegraph Hill into some actual location in San
Francisco. The writers, overseen by Monty, worked
plenty of real Bay Area locations into every plot.
Candy was bright, tough, and fearless. She used her
pistol infrequently, but was unintimidated by bad
guys, regardless of circumstances. Threats,
assaults, and even bullets would usually produce a
caustic, but clever, response for this blonde
sleuth. She and Mallard were frequently working the
same case, but she usually solved it first.
OTR experts generally agree that this show was the
finest of all the female PIs. Although the show ran
until May 1951, it never attracted a sponsor
(although the first season's final episode ended
with the announcement that "Candy Matson Is San
Francisco's Most Popular Program").
The
Phyl Coe Mysteries was a syndicated radio series
that came out in 1936, with the lead character's
name designed to reflect the sponsor, Philco Radio
Tubes. PHYL (short for Phyllis) COE is described as
the "beautiful girl detective". She was a private
investigator who was smart, aggressive, and a
"take-charge" lady. In one episode where a magician
is shot on stage, Phyl, who is attending the
performance, with her boy friend, leaps to the
stage, barks orders to theatre personnel, and solves
the crime before the cops even get there. In other
mysteries, she identifies the thief of a famous
painting, solves the mystery involving a new
death-ray gun, and solves a murder aboard an
aeroplane.
Mercedes
McCambridge star as lawyer in Defense Attorney
in defending the defenseless. She was born in
Joliet, Illinois, the daughter of Irish American
Catholic parents Marie (née Mahaffry) and John
Patrick McCambridge. She graduated from Mundelein
College in Chicago before embarking on a career.
She began her career as a radio actor during the
1940s while also performing on Broadway. Her radio
work in this period included her portrayal of
Rosemary Levy on Abie's Irish Rose and various
characters on the radio series I Love A Mystery in
both its West Coast and East Coast incarnations
(most notably as "Charity Martin" in The Thing That
Cries in the Night, "Nasha" and "Laura" in Bury Your
Dead, Arizona, "Sunny Richards" in both The Million
Dollar Curse and The Temple of Vampires and "Jack
'Jacqueline' Dempsey Ross" in The Battle of the
Century). She frequently did feature roles on the
CBS Radio Mystery Theater, and was an original cast
member on The Guiding Light, before the Bauers took
over as the central characters. She also starred in
her own show, The Defense Attorney as Martha Ellis
Bryant.
Kitty Keene,
Inc. was the only soap opera to have a private eye
in the leading role (unless you want to count
radio's Perry Mason). This series ran for four
years, beginning in September 1937. It was sponsored
by Dreft and was on CBS for one year and Mutual for
the remaining three. Like most soaps, it was a
15-minute serial.
Through the years, at least three actresses played
KITTY KEENE: Beverly Younger, Gail Henshaw and Fran
Carlon. Day Keene shared the script writing
responsibilities with Wally Norman. Kitty was an
"ex-Follies gal" who started her own detective
business, although since this was a soap, it took
her umpteen weeks to solve each crime.
In the four surviving episodes, Kitty sounds tough
but tender, with no clue to her age. However by the
fourth year on the air, her grown daughter had given
birth so this may also be radio's only grandmother
detective. No pushover even then, Kitty berates a
grand jury who almost exonerated a rackets boss, and
gets an indictment.
