This sampler of Gramavision's idiosyncratic catalog is so wide that it spills well beyond the boundaries of jazz into world music, blues, funk, and even contemporary classical music. When the CD does venture into jazz, it does so with an edge, an accent on the blues, and a healthy disdain for me-too followers of the mainstream. John Scofield performs some subtle electric guitar work on "Still Warm"; guitarist David Fiuczynski and organist John Medeski attack the blues in a psychedelic rock and soul-jazz pincer movement on "Slow Blues for Fuzy's Mama." Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, and the J.B. Horns react to a slow bluesy vamp on "Blues a la L.S.," and turn up the heat some more on "She's a Reptile." Medeski, Martin & Wood's shambling take on "Bemsha Swing" includes an injection of Bob Marley's "Lively Up Yourself" without breaking stride, Ray Anderson's big band is delightfully off-kilter on "Leo's Place," and Bernie Worrell (of the funk band Parliament), Maceo Parker, and Tony Williams burn it up on the soul-jazz "Blood Secrets." A bit of a surprise is the spectacle of classical minimalist composer LaMonte Young's fuzz-toned Forever Bad Blues Band bashing away on a drone in "Just Stompin'." Also represented on the sampler are Bob Moses, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Bob Telson, Liberty Horses, and Taj Mahal -- and adventurous listeners also get a jazzy sample from Anthony Davis' opera "X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X."
